WMC has long been an advocate for affirmative action to increase women's political representation. Strategies for increasing women's representation have included WMC advocating directly with the leadership of mainstream political parties, collaborating with other women's groups and networks, influencing the Constitutional drafting processes through proposing an affirmative action policy, etc.
WMC has supported the candidature of independent women contestants fielding women only lists. This initiative provided women with hands on experience of electoral processes, preparation of manifestos and election campaigning on a gender sensitive manifesto.
WMC has also focused on strengthening women's capacity in Local Government, working with locally based women's organizations that are gender sensitive, concerned with good governance and interested in political representation.
The political representation of women is strategically intended to:
- Improve good governance at the local level through the observance of selected Local Government bodies
- Promote interaction between local government members and community groups to improve governance at local level
- Increase representation of women in political institutions and decision making processes
